Sevens returns with a bang

The month of April will be busy with international 7s rugby with tournaments serving as qualifiers for the Rugby World Cup Sevens and Commonwealth Games.

The resumption of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 and joint Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022/Commonwealth Games qualifiers is taking place on two continents.

After the Fiji men’s team’s win in Singapore and reaching the final in Vancouver, the women’s side are next with the Langford tournament in Canada on April 30 to May 1.

A World Rugby statement says the festival of 7s will also involve Nassau in the Bahamas as the host city for the Rugby Americas North (RAN) men’s and women’s qualification tournaments for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in Cape Town and the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

It also reported while those two competitions will run concurrently, on April 23-24, the Rugby Africa qualification tournaments for the same two events will be staged separately and at different slots in the calendar.

Fourteen men’s teams will compete for tickets to Rugby World Cup Sevens and the Commonwealth Games in Kampala, Uganda on April 23-24, while Tunisia will host nine women’s teams on April 28-29.
