Athletics Fiji development officer Albert Miller says the final trials for preparations in the lead-up to Pacific Mini Games and Commonwealth Games will take place next week.
“We have been having our weekly competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva for a few weeks now and next week is the final week for trials so I am expecting many more athletes to be taking part,” the former Fiji athletics rep said.
“I think some of the athletes are also preparing for the Coca-Cola Games but you know, if we see more people here then so much the better for us.
“There’s still a chance to get into the team. We will still have competitions after that and if somebody runs a spectacular time after the trials, and if their name is on the list, you know, we can always include them.”
He said Athletics Fiji was grateful to have the support of the athletics clubs especially in the development of the athletes in the country.
“We’ve grateful for the clubs because in the past we’ve totally relied on the Coca-Cola Games and it shows in our pool of athletes that we choose from, but once we choose the team we can start focusing on the various events.”
He added there had been an increase in the number of people participating in the field events.
“Believe it or not, first time in the history of athletics in Fiji, we have more official events qualifiers than track and that’s the reality of where we are.
“Not taking anything away from the track athletes, it’s just we don’t have the quality that we had some years back but we’ll just have to build up on that and do our homework for the Pacific Games.”
