Waste Recyclers Fiji launched a Recycling on the Go (ROG) program in partnership with Swire Shipping and Jai Narayan College at the Vodafone Arena car park in Suva, yesterday.

Waste Recyclers Fiji chief executive Amitesh Deo said the program would be managed by 24 students of Jai Narayan College who would become advocates of recycling.

“They will go out and advocate for best practices of recycling within the school system and also beyond that,” he said.

Mr Deo said the idea behind the program was for students to become influencers in how people behaved towards recycling.

“The ownership of the program is the students and they will advocate so that the other students start practising recycling and there is a change of behaviour.

“We are going to provide training and monitoring and evaluation to the student ambassadors.”

Mr Deo said Jai Narayan College would be the first school for the extensive and robust program.

“We want to do lessons from it and we will do a comprehensive report from this program which we will release and then roll out from that to other schools.”

Among the 24 student advocates was 15-year-old Khrystall Lucas, a Year 10 student at Jai Narayan College.

Khrystall said recycling was important to her as it would help her to create awareness and help people in her community.

“Many times waste is often disposed in oceans and it affects the marine life. It is important that I advocate on this,” she said.
