Two new national records were set during the Fiji Swimming 2022 Long Course Mini Meet round three competition at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva last weekend.
Taichi Vakasama broke his own record in the male open 200 metre breaststroke.
He clocked 2 minutes 14.47 seconds.
The previous record stood at 2 minutes 14.98 seconds which he set at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.
Hansel McCaig broke Meli Malani’s male open 50m butterfly record. Malani set the national record of 25.34 seconds at the 11th Oceania Swimming Championship in 2016.
McCaig eclipsed that, setting a new time of 24.99s. Fiji Swimming president Ben Rova said they were proud of the preparations and training their swimmers were going through.
“I must commend all our coaches for the hard work despite all the elements and things that we are being faced with,” Rova said.
“The results recorded last weekend have been really promising for us.
“We had Taichi who broke his own record in the 200m breaststroke. It was faster than the time when he won the gold medal at the Pacific Games in 2019.
“Also Hansel broke a long standing record. So things are looking good in terms of our preparations for the international events this year and next year.”
