The Fiji Football Association will put more emphasis on the women’s national team after being awarded the hosting rights for the 2022 Oceania Women’s Nations Cup in July.

The Oceania Women’s Nations Cup will serve as the regional qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said the preliminary playoffs would be held first.

“Thereafter the top eight teams will come to Fiji for the main tournament,” Yusuf said.

“There will be two groups of four teams. Our preparations for the regional qualifiers have started.”

Fiji’s best finish at the event was second during the 2018 campaign.

The winner of the competition will get a half spot for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

This means the regional champion will advance to an inter-continental playoff to secure a spot at the women’s football pinnacle event.

Fiji will host the regional qualifiers from July 5-31.
