The Tailevu Rugby Union hosted its 10s tournament to commemorate their awareness on “return to rugby program” at the Ratu Ravuama Vunivalu Memorial School ground on Saturday.
Games committee chairman Joeli Tubu said after the recent government announcement that sporting events could have 80 per cent attendance provided those spectators wear masks, they held their tournament to follow all the protocols.
“For us we had to cater a certain amount of people to come and watch the games provided they adhere to the health protocols which is to wear their masks,” he said.
“Ever since the lockdown there wasn’t much competition and we are glad that everything is returning to normal.
“Last two weeks we had our pool competition. A total of 24 teams have registered. Next week we will have our elimination and finals and on February 26 we will continue with our round five (competition) which is a continuation from last year.”
Tubu said they had to look for funding to host the tournament. “We are grateful to Mokani Village for giving us the ground to have this competition.
“The money we collected from the registration fees we used for expenses of running this tournament and that is pay our medics, referees, sound system, security and the prizemoney for all categories which includes the main prize of $500.”
