Athletics Fiji’s quest to haul in as many medals as possible during the upcoming Pacific Mini Games commences with their maiden trials at the ANZ Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva today.

Team manageress Litia Senibulu said it would be the first national trials in a hectic AF schedule expected to unfold in blissful simplicity.

“We expect a sensational athletics trial tomorrow (today),” she said.

“There will be competitors participating in both the track and field events.

“There are things that champions overcome and the trials will allow them to strut their stuff.

“We will be able to gauge the performance of the extended squad members and analyse whether they are championship-calibre or otherwise.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time and everyone is excited to get a feel of the tracks again, especially with the challenges brought about by a killer virus.

“We’re anticipating a strong field.”

Senibulu said there was a long list of elite athletes with AF in both the genders expected to make an appearance at today’s event.

“The trials will commence at 9 in the morning and we expect it to conclude by 3pm.

“We’re expecting a good turn-out with close to 60 athletes competing in all the disciplines for both, males and females.

“They will be appearing in the events that are going to be a part of the athletics program in Saipan like the long distance, sprints, including shot put, javelin and long jump.

“We will also have the hurdles in the 100m and 110m.”

The 2022 Pacific Mini Games will be held in Saipan, Northern Marianas from June 16-25 with the sport of lawn tennis commencing on the first day of competition while the official opening will be held the next day.

The sport of athletics will be held for six days at the Oleai Sports Complex and commences on Monday, June 20.
