GOVERNMENT has been urged to provide a boat and engine to the National Fire Authority (NFA) or the Fiji Police Force in Rakiraki.

This, after NFA and police officers assisted people in distress by carrying them in a cut-out water tank over two days when parts of Rakiraki were flooded.

On Sunday, a pregnant woman was brought to the Rakiraki Hospital in the cut-out water tank and the body of a dead woman was also transferred across the flooded Naqoro flats in the same implement yesterday.

“This is very concerning that the Rakiraki district doesn’t have a boat for usage during floods,” said Rakiraki Chamber of Commerce president George Shiu Raj.

“This is unacceptable and it’s inhumane to carry human beings in a cut-out water tank.

“At the same time, we are risking the lives of those NFA and police officers who are wading through floodwaters to do this job.”

Mr Raj said the Government had been handing out fibreglass boats to communities for projects.

“One of these boats can be diverted to the NFA or police in Rakiraki.

“It would be very much appreciated.”
