Prime Minster Voreqe Bainimarama says 50 Republic of Fiji Military Forces soldiers will be dispatched to the Solomon Islands to assist the Australian Defence Force peacekeepers in their bid to restore order in Honiara.

In his response yesterday to last week’s Parliament-opening address by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the PM said another 120 troops would remain on standby for deployment if needed to help maintain security.

“I also wish to take this moment to convey my thoughts and prayers to our brothers and sisters in the Solomon Islands for the turmoil they are currently experiencing,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama said the Fijian troops will be commanded by Major Toanikeve.

Australia deployed security forces to Honiara and Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australian Federal Police and ADF troops were there to provide “security and stability” and would not interfere in the country’s internal affairs.

Violent protests erupted in Honiara last week, and one of the main reasons for the riots was allegedly the Solomon Islands government’s switch in diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China.

Papua New Guinea also deployed 20 police officers and 15 corrections officers at the request of the Solomon Islands’ government.
