Government had increased the salaries of teachers and post holders twice in the past seven years, says Education Ministry’s permanent secretary Anjeela Jokhan.
She said in 2014 teachers had a salary rise averaging 20 per cent and 10 per cent for leadership post orders.
Ms Jokhan said in 2017 after a Job Evaluation Exercise, teachers had another salary raise averaging 30 per cent.
“For example, for a normal classroom teacher, a normal classroom teacher previously received $9000 if he or she had a certificate, but now a certificate holder receives $14,000,” she said.
Ms Jokhan said a teacher with a degree received $26,000 compared with the previous $18,000 income.
According to Ms Jokhan, heads of department salaries jumped from $24,000 to $34,000.
She said assistant teachers’ salaries increased from $21,000 to $32,000 annually and vice-principals salaries increased from $32,000 to $43,000.
Ms Jokhan said the head of primary school today earned $51,000 annually compared with $39,000 whereas principals of large secondary schools jumped from $43,000 to $67,000.
