The National Fire Authority (NFA) has estimated the total damage costs of structural fires between January and September this year to be $5.8 million.
This, according to a statement from NFA CEO Puamau Sowane.
“From the month of January to September this year, the total cost of damage due to these fires has been estimated at $5.8 million for a period of nine months,” he said.
“Imagine, $5.8 million of hard work goes up in flames and reduced to ashes.”
He said according to records, there were 95 structural fire incidents between January and October.
He added 34 occurred in the Central/Eastern divisions, 45 in the Western Division and 16 in the Northern Division.
“Of the 95 structural fire incidents, 88 incidents were residential fires and seven were commercial fire incidents. In other words, 93 per cent of these fires were from homes and only 7 per cent were commercial buildings.”
