Hindus who convert to Christianity have been urged to donate their religious idols to a Hindu religious organisation, a priest or follower of the religion.

Shree Sanatan Dharm Purohit Brahman Maha Sabha Fiji acting secretary pundit Krishneel Tiwari made the comments while responding to the desecration of Hindu idols by a pastor in Lautoka.

“Disrespecting any particular religion is totally uncalled for and not the Fijian way of life we are all used to,” he said.

“The Brahman Maha Sabha Fiji encourages humility, respect and tolerance by all and for all, no matter your religious faith.

“Conversion of religious faith happens for whatever reason and it is a person’s human right, however, it should not be practised or portrayed in a way that hurts the sentiments of any other religion or its followers.

“We wish to stress that whenever a person of the Hindu faith is adopting another religion, to please donate the Hindu idols to a Hindu religious organisation, a priest or follower.”

Mr Tiwari said they acknowledged the apology given by the pastor.

“The Brahman Maha Sabha Fiji hopes and prays that such incidents do not occur in future and calls for religious tolerance and respect to continue.”
