The Fiji Navy has strengthened coastal patrols to ensure mariners follow maritime travel protocols during this COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, the Fiji Navy said it was part of measures to monitor controlled and authorised maritime movements as it was also a key component for the Health Ministry’s efforts to curb further outbreaks to other maritime islands.
The statement said the RFNS Kikau was deployed on inshore patrols over the past few weeks and it would continue to assist government efforts to ensure that mariners followed maritime travel protocols in place to safeguard other maritime islands from the virus.
Meanwhile, the RFNS Savenaca also assisted the Health Ministry deliver COVID-19 vaccines to the islands in the southern Lau Group.
The Fiji Navy said navy officers on board the RFNS Savenaca assisted health workers co-ordinate logistics support in the islands as it continues to support the national vaccination campaign.
