Flooding is now expected to be a thing of the past for Nawaka Settlement residents in Nadi after the completion of drainage and desilting works in the area.

According to the Government, close to 250 residents of the settlement will benefit from these drainage works.

M.A Khan Road Community president Ashfaaq Ahmad said the de-silting and drainage work had brought relief for the settlement and would prevent flooding.

“During rainy seasons, the area gets swampy, making movement difficult for people in the settlement. In addition to this, the settlement is also flooded during heavy rain due to improper drainage,” Mr Ahmad said via a Government statement

He said flooding would no longer be an issue for the 50 households in the Nawaka settlement.

Flooding concerns were raised to the Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy during an informal talanoa session in Nadi earlier this year.

Mr Reddy said the Government was committed to protect communities and ensure Government services in the rural sector met the needs of all.

He said the Ministry of Waterways would continue to assist rural households with their drainage and flood mitigation program.

He has also urged residents to refrain from littering in the waterways that contributed to flooding.
