Sangeeta Devi wanted to see her mother’s face one last time so she travelled from Tavua to the checkpoint that borders Lautoka and Ba.

Her mother, Damayanti Devi, 72, passed away at the FEMAT field hospital in Lautoka last Sunday, and COVID-19 restrictions meant she could not attend the funeral in Lautoka.

At the border, her brother, Shailend Chand, said he could not refuse his only sister’s wish.

“It is such a sad moment for all of us,” he said.

“We decided to drive all the way here so my sister and other family could say their final goodbyes.”
