Staff members of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund responded to a call from mothers at the Lautoka Hospital’s Maternity Ward who were running out of diapers for their newborns.
The supplies were delivered on Thursday through the company’s Sports and Social Club.
Fund chief executive officer Raj Sharma said members of the club came across an article in The Fiji Times that shared how parents of newborn babies were finding it difficult to get new supplies of diapers.
“So we decided to buy 32 set of basic needs for all the babies admitted,” he said.
“This is the initiative under our social club program CANE (Care All National Equally).”
Club president Nilesh Karan said they felt it was important they helped others.
“Our staff contributed and made it possible for us to get the packs to these newborns.
“At first we could not reach out to the mothers themselves so we contacted the sister in charge at the maternity ward who facilitated the delivery at the checkpoint.”
Mr Karan said they also recognised frontline workers, especially health workers who have been fighting to keep Fijians safe.
