Four naval personnel from the Republic of Fiji Navy undertook intensive theoretical and practical diving training under a basic divers’ course.
The four naval personnel alongside one 3FIR (Land Forces Command), two Territorial Forces Brigade personnel and one naval reserve were part of the training.
According to the Fiji Navy, the remaining eight completed the hectic divers course which had initially started with over 20 personnel.
For seven weeks the trainees, according to the Fiji Navy underwent intensive training and the phases of diving included training in a pool, sea diving and search and diving techniques in a river.
The successful graduates are also earmarked for further diving training and courses in the US Navy and the Royal Australian Navy later in the year.
In his closing remarks, Commander Fiji Navy Captain Humphrey Tawake congratulated the graduates for successfully completing the highly intensive course and highlighted plans for more diving training and engagement with their defence partners.
Fiji Navy highlighted that its navy diving team was a critical unit within the RFN with inherent capacity to conduct underwater searches, minor underwater ship maintenance and salvage.
There are also senior members of the unit qualified and trained in defensive diving and explosive ordinance disposal operations.
