Fijians to bear cost for 14-day quarantine

Fijians involved in non-essential travel, including visiting friends and family, will have to bear their own cost for the mandatory 14-day quarantine beginning today, March 29, 2021.

In a statement Government confirmed that it will no longer cover the cost of non-essential repatriation.

Since March 2020, more than 12,800 Fijians have been repatriated through Fiji’s COVID-safe quarantine protocols with a cost of over $18 million to the Fijian Government, which covered meals, accommodation, swab tests, transportation and other costs.

New charges apply to:

– Fijian passport holders.

– Fijians residing overseas and are dual passport holders or;

– Permanent residents of another country.

The charges will cover the cost of meals and accommodation.

Those exempted are:

– Fijian citizens who have travelled overseas before 28 March 2020 and are now returning home;

– Patient and the approved companion who is supported by the Fijian Ministry of Health and Medical Services to seek medical assistance/intervention overseas;

– Students returning after the completion of studies, with their approved dependents, on Government-sponsored or Government endorsed scholarships.

– Fijian citizens employed under the Government-to-Government arrangement to which the Fijian Government is a party to, for example, workers returning under labour schemes.

– Returning Fijian Government officials, servicemen and Fijian Diplomats (including spouse and children under 18 years of age) who have travelled for official purposes.
