A SUBSIDIARY of BSP Life has become the country’s first solar-powered poultry business after partnering with Pan-Pacific solar energy provider Sunergise International to turn one of their major properties in Ba into a green energy leader.
Rooster Poultry incoming general manager Stanley Raniga said electricity was a major part of their operation and having solar power was the perfect alternative energy source to supplement their energy requirements.
“We have a huge roof space that we can put to work to reduce operating costs. The 250 kilowatt (kW) roof-mounted installations at the poultry operations is Fiji’s largest, and was completed by a local team of engineers from Sunergise’s partner company, Clay Energy.
“As the sun shines most of the year in Ba, we are in the perfect location to harness this energy using the system installed by Sunergise to power our facilities.
“Not only are we saving money but we are also doing our part for our environment. The aim is take it to 500kW later this year.”
Sunergise Fiji director Ajay Raniga said they were delighted to work with a client such as Rooster Poultry, and to be able to offer them an option to enjoy long-term real savings.
“The poultry industry in Fiji is growing fast — over 18 million birds were processed in 2013, double the number from 2010. Fiji is well on the way to becoming self-sufficient in poultry. This project has been one of the most exciting we’ve undertaken so far and the company is looking forward in the coming year to doubling the installation size to 500kW.”
