Only a handful of lawyers in Fiji can attract international work.

This, according to Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while speaking at the Fiji Law Society/International Bar Association Convention 2021 in Nadi recently.

He said there was lack of specialisation in Fijian law firms.

“The fact that only 14 law firms, out of 161 law firms in Fiji have websites, means there is a lack of specialisation,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“The question that should be asked; why aren’t the other lawyers in private practice able to attract international work.”

He said 95 per cent of Fijians today owned mobile phones which meant that this faction had internet connectivity.

“In other words, 95 per cent Fijians can access your law firm, through your website, but only 14 law firms have websites.”

He also said that lawyers who worked in private firms were underpaid.
