The Fijian Government has received roofing iron metal sheets worth more than $20,000 that will go towards rebuilding homes in the Northern Division that were devastated by Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa.
Minister for Education Rosy Akbar received the donation of 500 x 12ft roofing iron metal sheets worth $17,400 from the Fiji Aid Melbourne, and 100 x 12ft roofing iron metal sheets worth $3480 from ABS Fiji.
Ms Akbar is in the Northern Division to review the status of the 68 schools being used as evacuation centres and to gauge the reality of school opening time frames for 2021.
According to a Government statement, Ms Akbar will hand over the roofing material to villagers whose homes were severely damaged by the cyclone.
“This Christmas, we are facing the unique challenges of re-building lives and communities in the wake of TC Yasa, but our resolve and courage as a nation will triumph, and we will build back with a renewed sense of purpose and faith. Throughout this difficult period, many Fijians, here and around the world have selflessly answered the call for help from their fellow citizens,” Ms Akbar said.
The Minister acknowledged ABS Fiji and Fiji Aid Melbourne for contributing to national relief efforts and for the good work they were doing to assist Fijian communities that had suffered from the devastation of natural disasters.
Fiji Aid Melbourne had in June of this year handed over a set of 150 computers, 10 printers and 100 pairs of mouse and keyboards to the Ministry of Education to support rural schools that were severely affected by TC Harold.
