For young Meli Serevi Jr rugby is a lifeblood that flows through the veins.
Backed by a grand family legacy, young Meli just wants to play the sport that has made his family name a household brand.
“Rugby is all around me, and I knew that like my family before me I would also play,” Meli said.
“But I’m learning every day.”
The 13-year-old player from Qarani Village on Gau is the son and namesake of Meli Serevi Sr, younger brother of 7s wizard Waisale Serevi.
“I know the history behind the name and the great players like my father and uncle who have come before me.
“But for me, I just want to be myself, do my best and enjoy rugby.”
Meli says apart from his family, God has been a main source of strength.
“I thank the Almighty for giving me the talent, without him nothing would have been possible. And I also thank my family for being my backbone and for always supporting me.”
The Year 8 Suva Primary School student is set to join Queen Victoria School and will be a name to watch in next year’s Deans Rugby competition.
