In the race to become a modern society, we have gone very far ahead technologically but have not set up the safeguards needed to minimise the impact of access to information.
This is the view of Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali in the wake of revelations that a Year 8 student was involved in a sexually explicit video with another boy which was shared via the internet to others.
“The easy access to pornography and the impression it creates is a huge issue,” she said.
“They show that being involved in these types of videos is very ‘sexy’ and this shows a lack of education about the responsible use of the internet.
“It also exposes the lack of responsibility of young boys and how they view relationships.
“They look at it as being exploitative instead of loving and this is an issue that needs to be urgently addressed at home.”
Ms Ali said instead of giving young children unfettered access to mobile phones, tablets and the internet, parents needed to set guidelines and boundaries and monitor their use.
