Fiji’s top amateur golfer Abid Hussain continued his winning form to comfortably defend the Coca-Cola Amatil/Paradise Beverages Nadi Open Golf Championship title at the New Town course.
It was a battle between father (Abid) and son (Barroon) in the two-day tournament with Abid using his experience to win by four strokes.
Abid carded one under par 139 to win the title for the fourth consecutive year.
He scored one over par 71 in the first round and two under par 68 in the second round.
So far this year, Abid has already bagged the Fiji Amateur Championship, Vanua Levu Classic, Suva Open Championship and the Fiji Open Championship amateur division titles.
He is set to defend the Denarau Open Championship on November 21 followed by the Western Amateur Championship and the Vanua Levu Open Championship later this month.
Abid said he had been practicing regularly focusing on his drives and putting on the greens.
He said the aim was to end the year as the number one amateur player in the country.
“Unfortunately because of the closure of the boarders I cannot travel overseas to participate in international tournaments,” Abid said.
“However I am keeping myself in shape and hope that the boarders open soon so I can participate in those tournaments to better my world rankings.”
Because of the lockdown and the staging of non-world ranking rankings tournaments in the country, Abid’s ranking has dropped to 3789.
His best ranking is 1689.
Nadi Airport Golf Club president Ashok Kumar said the tournament was a grand success with fine weather prevailing on both days.
He said it was good to see veteran players from Suva enter the field.
