FORMER national surfing reps have formed a new club, called “Vodo Ua’” to share their knowledge of the sport to the community.
After representing Fiji at several international outings and winning medals, one of the committee members Ian Muller said; “It’s time to build a future for the future.”
Muller said the first generation of surfers used their raw talent to make Fiji proud. However, he added they thought it was time to groom the second generation of surfers.
“This club is formed so we can share our knowledge with the next generation of surfers,” he said.
“We have won medals because of surfing and we want the second generation of surfers to be better than us.
“We have the infrastructure to groom new surfers.”
The club has attracted 200 to 300 keen surf learners despite forming the club two months ago. Muller said they urged the general public to try out a different sport.
“We’re pleased with the interest shown by the public. Right now we have about 300 surfers ever since we started our club, two months ago.
“We’re still urging the public to come out and try a different sport apart from the average sport of rugby, soccer and netball.
“We got a wide Ocean and we can utilise it well if people come in numbers to try out surfing.”
Muller added, later this month, the club will host another competition at the Natadola Beach in Nadi.
