Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama last night launched a new $50 and 50 cents as commemorative currencies.

He said Fiji’s new currencies represented Fiji’s rich past but more importantly Fiji’s remarkably bright future.

Mr Bainimarama said Fiji’s cherished moments had been immortalised on the front of the newly designed $50 banknote with highlights of the Fiji blue, bright yellow, and the familiar orange of Fiji’s $50 bill.

He said the commemorative polymer $50 banknote was strikingly vibrant and colourful adding to Fiji’s already beautiful collection of bills known around the world for their tropical flair.

He said the commemorative Fiji 50 cent coin was one that was exceptional in its own right, as the first-ever coloured coin to be released in Fijian history.

Mr Bainimarama also announced that a specially packaged Fiji 50 cent coin would be distributed to all school students, from Years 1 to 13 over the next few weeks.

“It’s my hope that these coins find a special place in the lives of Fijian children everywhere –– sitting cherished on bookshelves, or stored among their prized possessions,” he said.

Meanwhile, both the currencies will be issued into circulation from today as a legal tender.
