Nine women were among the 31 recipients who received the 50th anniversary of independence medal from Fijian President Jioji Konrote at the State House in Suva today.

Among them was Fiji Broadcasting Corporation radio personality Noor Jahan Begum.

She said it was a privilege to be recognised for the work she had done over the last 30 years as a radio personality.

Dr Nur Bano Ali said the medal brought back memories of her late father, Bakar Ali – a businessman in Sigatoka.

She said women empowerment in Fiji had changed over the past 50 years where they now had equal rights to education, work, and services.
