The undergraduate studies cost thousands and I believe with the decrease in TELS and Toppers Scholarship opportunities in Fiji, upcoming students are bound to face difficulties.

I believe our newspapers should not be reporting on cases such as rape, murder or even theft. It doesn’t give peace to any mind that reads it.

Shipping routes
THE news in FT 09/09 — as per announcement in Parliament — that new shipping routes to Beqa, Yanuca and Vatulele are expected to begin this month has been a long time coming.
It will most certainly be good news to the travellers to and from the three nearest islands to Suva and the Coral Coast, never before serviced as such.
The multiplier effect it will have will certainly help to open up their fledgling economies currently hampered by limited passenger and cargo capacities.
This will undoubtedly be a plus all-round. The possibility that shipping companies may have considered these routes to be uneconomical may have been the reason for its absence in the past. According to the announcement, the new routes are expected to be serviced every two months, probably mixed with the more economical routes to make it viable.
I am sure its introduction will still provide ample opportunities for the current smaller craft operators to continue to ply their trade in between the service times.
So, I guess it’s all good. Now, we just have to wait and see who will secure the route licences.

Solar power
IN regard to ‘Village launches solar power project’ (FT 12/09), it is a farsighted endeavour to promote usage of solar power by Fiji’s PM.
This will certainly boost access to clean water and electricity in future. Carbon conventional fuel has an expiry date and produces a lot of pollutants (solid, liquid and gas) that damage the environment.
Therefore, Fiji is also adapting the usage of solar lights and fans that will conserve energy for the future.
This cheaper means of power is fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. Solar power nowadays can be used in rechargeable batteries, solar heaters, thermostats, solar streetlights, solar cookers and others.
This renewable energy source with low maintenance costs is the future of the world.
