Good for rugby union

I believe provincial rugby can only improve with an improved standard of refereeing.

Congratulations to Naitasiri for the win at Churchill Park.

Tertiary studies

NOW that the biggest global economies are facing a depression, I wonder what effect it will have on tertiary education in the coming months and years.

The undergraduate studies cost thousands and I believe with the decrease in TELS and Toppers Scholarship opportunities in Fiji, upcoming students are bound to face difficulties.

Newspaper report

I believe our newspapers should not be reporting on cases such as rape, murder or even theft. It doesn’t give peace to any mind that reads it.

I believe it depicts man’s failures. By not covering it, maybe this is one of many ways we can control this pandemic hitting our nation.

I believe it’s a real shame when it’s read by the public.

The process

YOU find discarded power poles and truck tyres by the roadside.

The process is replace, repair, then remove.

USP saga

IT is apparently clear, the ugly saga at the USP Fiji campus has again reared its ugly head. How sad? So needless.

Why can’t some just move on with respect, dignity and some heart?

Do we need this?

Changing times

AS times change, it is becoming difficult for the whole family to sit together and watch movies.

The get-together becomes embarrassing where some members have to excuse themselves.

A similar situation is arising when the radio is on.

Shipping routes

THE news in FT 09/09 — as per announcement in Parliament — that new shipping routes to Beqa, Yanuca and Vatulele are expected to begin this month has been a long time coming.

It will most certainly be good news to the travellers to and from the three nearest islands to Suva and the Coral Coast, never before serviced as such.

The multiplier effect it will have will certainly help to open up their fledgling economies currently hampered by limited passenger and cargo capacities.

This will undoubtedly be a plus all-round. The possibility that shipping companies may have considered these routes to be uneconomical may have been the reason for its absence in the past. According to the announcement, the new routes are expected to be serviced every two months, probably mixed with the more economical routes to make it viable.

I am sure its introduction will still provide ample opportunities for the current smaller craft operators to continue to ply their trade in between the service times.

So, I guess it’s all good. Now, we just have to wait and see who will secure the route licences.

A good laugh

THE one thing Trump can’t be accused of is not giving people the world over a good laugh.

His latest claim that he is one of the world’s greatest greenie almost made my eyes pop out with laughter.

Solar power

IN regard to ‘Village launches solar power project’ (FT 12/09), it is a farsighted endeavour to promote usage of solar power by Fiji’s PM.

This will certainly boost access to clean water and electricity in future. Carbon conventional fuel has an expiry date and produces a lot of pollutants (solid, liquid and gas) that damage the environment.

Therefore, Fiji is also adapting the usage of solar lights and fans that will conserve energy for the future.

This cheaper means of power is fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. Solar power nowadays can be used in rechargeable batteries, solar heaters, thermostats, solar streetlights, solar cookers and others.

This renewable energy source with low maintenance costs is the future of the world.
