Fiji’s 2021 school calendar out; one student-free day

Fiji’s Ministry of Education is cutting down on the student-free days for teachers in the 2021 school term.

This is indicated in a circular released on August 14, where acting permanent secretary for the Education Ministry, Susan Kiran, informed all heads of schools of the 2021 school calendar.

The ministry used to allocate up to three days for teachers’ student-free days each term since its inception a few years ago.

Teachers will report to work on Monday, 18 January, 2021 for their one student-free day preparations, and students return for classes on Tuesday January 19.

The first term will end on April 24.

The second term will begin on May 11 and end on August 13 while the third term starts on August 31 and concludes on November 26.

“Heads of schools are requested to bring to the attention of the parents and guardians, the start and end dates for each term to ensure that students are prepared and provided with the parental support needed throughout the term,” Ms Kiran said.

She said the release of the term dates would allow heads of schools to manage all enrolment at the start of each new term.

“Heads of schools for boarding schools are expected to organise all hostel accommodation needs before the start of each term to ensure that hostels are safe and ready for occupation.”
