Evergreen Simione Tamanisau proved that age is no barrier in sport helping Rewa defeat Suva 1-0 in the final to lift the Punjas Battle of the Giants title at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.
The 38-year-old proved to be one of the stars for the Delta Tigers winning the trophy for the ninth occasion.
Hailing from Naisaumua in Verata, Tailevu, veteran Tamanisau was part of the Rewa team that won the BOG title at Churchill Park way back in 2003 and also at the same venue in 2017.
Tamanisau, a policeman, said the passion for the sport kept him going strong. Olympian Tamanisau applauded Fiji Football Association’s efforts to make the sport drug free.
“First of all I wish to thank the Lord as He has been the strength and inspiration for the team,” the lanky goalkeeper said.
“Hats off to Suva for giving us a tough time. Our boys stuck to the game plan and we came out victors.
“I thank the coaching staff for believing in me to play for the district. It is fun to play with the young boys, especially representing Rewa again and it is always a privilege to don the red jersey.”
Tamanisau, who also won the Pacific Games gold medal in 2003 representing Fiji, said the best policy was to say no to drugs.
“Drugs in sports does not do anyone any good.
“It is better for players to stay away from drugs and have a positive mind.
“I think I can probably play another seven or eight years is left for me in playing,” Tamanisau said.
