University of the South Pacific council members will determine whether the decision of the executive committee to suspend vice-chancellor Prof Pal Ahluwalia was made in bad faith and should be overturned.
Incoming chancellor and Nauru President Lionel Aingimea stated in a letter to pro-chancellor and chair of the council Winston Thompson that this would be the agenda for the meeting this Friday.
Mr Aingimea had initially informed Mr Thompson on Monday that members were being made aware that the meeting would take place at 10am today.
However, Mr Aingimea acceded to Mr Thompson’s meeting arrangement and reminded him that the university was “owned by the member countries for the benefit of the people and the needs and wellbeing of the communities of the South Pacific”.
He said those calling for a special meeting of the council had the right to specify the time, date, place and agenda of the meeting.
Mr Aingimea stated that Mr Thompson had failed in his “duty to report to council on the decision process adopted by the executive committee and how those decisions were made”.
Mr Thompson said it was an internal matter and didn’t want to debate the issue.
The agenda also includes reports from Mr Thompson and acting vice-chancellor Prof Derrick Armstrong.
The virtual special council meeting is scheduled for Friday morning at the Laucala campus in Suva.
