THIS is my Valentine’s Day story.
I know its bit late but I guess it’s worth it.
So on February 14, which I treat as any normal day really, I went to the cinemas to watch this movie.
Are We Officially Dating also known as The Awkward Moment was the in thing during that period given its significance toValentine’s Day.
My good buddies RV and Lix, whose girlfriends are abroad, thought the movie would be a good way to bring down the curtains to what was a “lonely” day for them.
So I joined them purely on the purpose of a good entertainment and not really realising their motive behind this movie night.
You see, they were seeking some romantic triumph in Are We Officially Dating to maybe down their sorrows of being apart from their loved ones on the day that is dedicated to them.
And I’m sure they weren’t disappointed.
The movie is about three friends Jason (Zac Efron), Daniel (Miles Teller) and Mikey (Michael B. Jordan). Jason and Daniel work together at a publishing company where they design book covers.
Jason is dumped by a girl, who thinks he is insecure about their relationship, Daniel isn’t seeing anyone and shares a close friendship with his female wingman Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis), while young doctor Mikey is dealing with wife Vera (Jessica Lucas) who is after a divorce.
The trio make a pact not to commit themselves to relationships anymore.
They meet one evening and go out for a drink at a bar where Jason meets chirpy Ellie (Imogen Poots) and ends up at her apartment.
Mikey meets a girl (Kate Simses) and manages to get her number but doesn’t call her, instead tries to mend his relationship with his estranged wife.
They start getting along well.
Daniel continues seeing Chelsea and gets closer to her.
As the three get deeper into this game, they eventually fall in love but quite in oblivion of that fact and keep the nitty-gritty details about their relationships a secret.
Following a dramatic turn of events, the truth is unveiled and the reaction is an interesting one.
Are We Officially Dating is really about falling in love without realising it and by the time it hits you, you are left clueless of what to do next.
With teenagers, especially boys, (well for many of us), having “flings” is like the coolest thing ever.
We don’t want to let our friends know that we are in love, “I’m having fun” sounds better at that time.
Some might deny this but I know at that age, but for many including me, having a playboy image is like everyone’s game.
But there are times during that course when you find true love and the lucky ones are those who are able to realise and respect that.
Are We Officially Dating is about realising, getting some means, wanting more, although wanting more may leave you with nothing.
The actors Efron, who gained fame with the High School Musical, Miles of 21 and Over fame and Jordan, did nothing extraordinary in their performing worth commending.
However, English actress Poots performance as a cheerful and lively girl in search of true love is outstanding.
She gives the character of Ellie, the energy to stay together despite being let down in love and the ability to forget the past and embrace the future with hope that love will last forever.
That’s what many perceive makes females weak but in fact it makes them stronger in many ways.
While there is nothing special in Are We Officially Dating, it does achieve its goal of delivering the message of love.
