WOMEN should always be treated as equal to men.

This was the main message shared to members of the Tavua Sikh community as they celebrated Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th birthday anniversary yesterday.

The annual event was observed with the reciting of passages from holy books and devotional songs.

Head priest Maninder Pal Singh said the celebration was held to remind believers about the life that the guru lived and the importance of following his example.

“The guru believed that all human beings are supposed to be treated equally and everyone is the same,” Mr Singh said.

“Women should also gain the same respect as men as they play an important role in society and such is the practice in many Sikh societies.”

The guru’s birthday celebrations were held in Suva, Tavua and Lautoka.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first guru of Sikh believers and his birthday celebration is commemorated worldwide.
