Five people remanded for assault charges

THREE women and two men were produced at the Nausori Magistrates Court this afternoon charged with serious assault after allegedly assaulting police officers last  Sunday at Vuci Road in Nausori.

Mikaele Waqatairewa,28,  Joeli Damudamu  24,  Makeretea Tunasiga,26,  Siteri Dinawai, 20, and  Ruci Silita,43, appeared before Shageeth Somaratne.

Four police officers were responding to a report of fight in progress at a shop along Vuci Road when the alleged incident occurred.

The accused were warned to leave the area in which they refused and allegedly confronted and assaulted the police officers.

Mr Waqatairewa is charged with one count of disobedience of lawful order, one count of serious assault, three counts of damaging property and one count of resisting arrest.

Mr Damudamu, Ms Tunasiga, Ms Dinawai and Ms Silita are charged with one count of disobedience of lawful order and one count each of serious assault.

The court was informed that the  prosecution was objecting to bail since the State had a strong case against the accused persons’ and since a police officer was allegedly injured during the incident.

All five have been remanded in custody.

The matter will be called again  this Friday.
