A NATIONAL tsunami drill was held this afternoon in Suva City as part of the World Tsunami Day.
National Disaster Management Office team leader emergency planning and coordination Litia Bainimarama said it was part of raising awareness on tsunami.
“This is basically how we want to bring to the forefront the importance of tsunami awareness and how they can prepare themselves in terms of tsunami preparedness,” Ms Bainimarama said.
The BDO conducted the exercise with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd and a live tsunami drill for four primary schools in the Vatuwaqa area.
This is part of the Government’s commitment towards improving its state of readiness for any tsunami event.
Some 30 students from the Fiji School for the Blind, 831 students from Mahatma Ghandi Memorial School, 752 students from Saint Marcellin Primary School, and 107 students from Marist Champagnat Institute participated in the exercises.
