NFA receives first water tanker

THE first-ever 20,000 litre water tanker was officially handed over today to the National Fire Authority (NFA) at Walu Bay by Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar.

The $1m Government-funded water tanker has the capacity to shoot 2800 liters of water in one minute.

NFA Acting Chief Executive Officer Mileta Seniroqa explains the water tanker is a support truck that will be on a 24-hour call.

She said the support truck would respond to any incident that came on board depending on the magnitude of the incident.

She added this new equipment would greatly assist firefighters effectively respond to emergencies.

“It (water tanker) will definitely go a long way in supporting our fire fighters in effectively responding to incidents of fire and in other operations,” Ms Seniroqa said.

There are plans to expand the resource to other divisions.

“We felt the great need to expand this resource to the Western Division and likewise to the Northern Division. We want to make sure that our people are well equipped to be able to respond to effectively to any fire incident or major emergencies.”

The NFA is expected to receive new uniforms for firefighters next month.
