THE Government spends more than $3million annually to operate the country’s only landfill at Naboro.

Minister for Agriculture and Environment Dr Mahendra Reddy noted this in a Government statement issued today, with the announcement of plans of a new landfill operations concept that would be technology-sound and futuristic.

He said a senior team from the ministry had been tasked with the development of the concept.

“One that would, if not totally eliminate, but slow down and reduce the extension of newer pits,” Mr Reddy said.

According to the statement, since the opening of the landfill in 2005, the Department of Environment had paid more than $715,000 in royalties  to Yavusa Bativudi, in the Province of Rewa – the owners of the land where the landfill sits.

Dr Reddy says the Ministry of Waterways and Environment will be spending $5.2million for the expansion of the landfill.

The Naboro Waste Management Landfill commenced its operations in 2005.
