FORMER Flying Fijians assistant coach in the 2007 Rugby World Cup The Rev Joji Rinakama believes the Dominiko Waqaniburotu-captained side needs a morale boost before their first Rugby World Cup pool match against Australia on Saturday.
Rinakama assisted Ilivasi Tabua in coaching the Flying Fijians when they made the quarter-final against South Africa in the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
The former Nadroga and Naitasiri head coach said Fijians had a common personality and that was how they would be inspired after a motivational speech.
“It’s in every Fijian rugby players’ DNA that words of encouragement before every match in a local or international rugby arena will boost their performance,” Rinakama said.
“It’s part of our tradition and belief that if a chief, village elder or leader spends two to three minutes with a motivational speech to the players, it can improve their performance in the Rugby World Cup. It will make a difference on the field despite how tough their opponents could be.”
Rinakama said the RWC was a platform where words of encouragement were an element that the players would need before their matches.
“In 2007 we reminded the players about their purpose and who they were playing for and the expectations back at home.
“I have no doubt with this team because this is the best squad to leave our shores for the Rugby World Cup and if Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is going to watch the game then he will be the best person to motivate the boys before their first match.”
Rinakama believes coach John McKee and his boys will turn the tables in the RWC.
“These players are professional rugby players, but they still need that encouragement because it’s the world cup. I know that with the right combination and the individual skills, no team can stand in their way. I wish them the best in Japan,” Rinakama said.
