AN 89-year-old pastor survived a near death experience when a car driven by alleged robbers crashed into his room and stopped a few metres from his bed.
Seaki Vateitei, former correction services offi cer, was sleeping at the One World Church in Cunningham, Suva when the incident happened.
It is alleged the vehicle was used by four men who were being chased by police after they stole about $1000 worth of cash and assorted cigarettes from K-24 Supermarket at Khalsa Rd,
Nasinu.
Mr Vateitei said he could have lost his life, but it was divine intervention that saved him.
“I was shocked to find a huge slab of concrete over me after 3 in the morning and an actual car right beside the bed where I was sleeping.
It was unbelievable,” he said.
“I was awoken by a very loud sound, that was when the car crashed into the wall of the church and a slab of concrete flew over my head.
“Fortunately I survived without a single injury and all I can say is that the power of God saved me.”
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the four men were allegedly armed with knives and pinch bars when they entered the supermarket.
She said they threatened security officers and cashiers before they fled in a stolen vehicle.
Ms Naisoro said police pursued the suspects and roadblocks were erected.
“The stolen vehicle was found after it crashed into a house and the four had jumped into a taxi and in the process allegedly stoned the police vehicle,” she said.
They were later arrested at a roadblock at Dokanaisuva in Tacirua and were questioned at the Valelevu Police Station.
