BUS drivers must be aware of the traffic regulation relating to when they pull away from bus stops, says the Land Transport Authority(LTA).

In a statement released today, the authority stated that Traffic Regulations 13 (1) and 87 of the Land Transport (Traffic) Regulation 2000, stated the driver of a motor vehicle must give way to the bus when the driver had indicated with his right-hand signal indicator to enter the carriageway.

Failure to do this was an offence, the LTA says.

“As such, motorists are reminded that buses have the right of way at bus stops/bus bays after completion of passenger boarding and alighting and have to move onto carriage way or roads to proceed with the journey,” LTA chief executive Samuel Simpson said.

“Any vehicle approaching the bus from behind must yield.

“Of equal importance is the requirement for bus drivers to use their mirrors to establish if it is safe to move onto the carriageway and clearly signal their intent by activating their right hand indicators.”
