INFORMATION about children who are victims of sexual abuse should be well protected, says Save the Children Fiji chief executive officer Iris Low-McKenzie while presenting a submission on the Registration of Sex Offenders Bill to the Standing Committee of Human Rights yesterday.
Ms McKenzie said while it was understood that access to the register was restricted, there should be a mechanism in place whereby the Police are able to check against the register or have the register linked to the police for police clearance checks.
She said the Act was a first for Fiji and a very important one, and to ensure that this Act was implemented, there must be adequate resources to allow the specified agencies to first understand it, monitor it and in particular the reporting obligations and penalties.
