ABOUT 8000 people in the North of Tailevu will now have better medical access with the opening of the new Sawakasa Health Centre on Friday.
The villagers used to travel to Korovou for medical treatment after the Sawakasa Dispensary was destroyed in a fire in 2017.
Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said the need to rebuild the health facility was because of the huge number of people from Sawakasa and nearby villages who had to fork out extra money to travel to Korovou Hospital to get checked.
“We made sure that it is a much comfortable centre for the people in Tailevu north,” he said.
Dr Waqainabete said the ministry has extended the dispensary to a health centre status, with more than $100,000 injected for the project.
“There is a doctor who is here regularly and also nurses.
“We make sure it fits the purpose to be a health centre ensuring that we have the proper OHS requirement.”
The health centre which will be manned by four medical staff members including a doctor will operate from 8am to 5pm daily
