NUKU’ALOFA, 20 DECEMBER 2018 (RNZ PACIFIC) – Tonga is hoping its climate resilience can be improved by becoming the 29th member of the Global Green Growth Institute.

The institute is a treaty-based international organisation in South Korea, designed to boost sustainable economic growth in developing countries.

The kingdom is the fifth country from the Pacific to join the group, with Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Kiribati and Vanuatu already members.

Government representative Emeline Veikoso Laumanu met with the institute’s president and the former Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon after their addition to the group.

The government says the GGGI will support Tonga in pursuing an inclusive approach to improve resilience while enhancing infrastructure, energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The institute says it is looking forward to working with Tonga to contribute to the goal of reaching 50 percent renewable electricity by 2020.
