TEACHERS and students of Labasa Sangam Sadhu Kupuswamy Memorial College had a reason to celebrate yesterday as they marked the World Teachers Day and Children’s Day with dances and songs.

Students took lead roles in entertaining their mentors yesterday, while teachers took part in fun activities organised by students of the school.

Officiating at the celebration, the school’s former principal Luisa Ratuvuku called on students to remember their elders and ensure their wellbeing.

Ms Ratuvuku told children they owed a lot to their elders for moulding them to be the people they were now and would become in the future.

“When compared with other countries in the world, we can take pride in our cultural heritage that encourages and fosters strong relationships within families,” she said.

“It enforces strong human values which enable children to thrive in an environment of love, respect and caring, especially taking care of our elders.

“Respect who you are, your family, respect others and our differences and become responsible future Fiji citizens.”

Speaking to teachers, Ms Ratuvuku told them the celebration recognised their valuable contribution towards education and the overall development of the country and the globe as a whole.

“Teachers, the future of our Fiji and the world depends to a large extent on what you do to our current students,” she said.

“You are setting the stage for our children’s future aspirations, and career pathways.”

According to the UN General Assembly, all countries were recommended to institute a Universal Children’s Day on December 14, 1954, while in 1966 the International Labour Organization (ILO) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a recommendation concerning the status of teachers.
