Waisiki’s rugby journey

FORMER Fiji 7s and New Zealand 7s rep Waisiki Masirewa believes rugby can help players grow and reach their full potential in their rugby careers.

Masirewa, 51, was in Fiji last week where he was ordained as a minister for the All Nations Christian Fellowship (ANCF) church in Suva.

He said he had the best time of his life playing for Fiji and New Zealand.

“I was fortunate to play for Fiji 7s and New Zealand 7s in my rugby career and I have also played for the Flying Fijians. My journey in rugby had been a blessing for me with some ups and downs,” he said.

“I had never dreamt of going to different places, but rugby took me there and it all had been possible with God’s plan in my life.

“I was once dropped from the national team and I got hurt so I went to New Zealand to revive my rugby career and then came back and donned the white jersey again.”

He said he had cherished memories of his playing days.

“It was a privilege for me to represent New Zealand 7s,” he said.

“I was playing in another tournament when Gordon Tietjens walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to play for New Zealand.

“He said if I said yes to him then the rest of the players would fight for their places and my place would be secured. Every time you represent a country it is a special moment.”
