Tabua for sale

Tabua for sale

I spotted a shop in Lautoka with a sign that said “Tabua for sale”.

When I asked for the price, I was told $800.

The tabua is of no use to anyone but the iTaukei.

Its significance only the iTaukei know.

Well, there are those who have adopted it and used it in ceremonies.

But I thought the sale of tabua was illegal?

It’s rather sad that for a small one the iTaukei will pay $800 because they need it.

And it’s sad that the non-iTaukei who sell it know about it, although they have no use for it. Come on people in authority, do something, to safeguard this heritage.
