SDGs for a viable economy: Luveni

Update: 12:17PM SUSTAINABLE Development Goals (SDGs) promote a viable and healthier economy, says Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni.

Leading Fiji’s delegation to the World Parliamentary Forum on SDGs last week, Dr Luveni emphasised Fiji’s parliament programs and initiatives to ensure the 17 SDGs were outlined and upheld.

“Prominent in this role is the mandatory requirement to analyse public input through gender lenses to ensure issues pertaining to women empowerment is considered,” Dr Luveni said.

“Also, included in the introductory pages are Fiji’s demographic indicators reflecting male or female members by age groups. This tool is available to all MPs at all times particularly, to measure effective progress on development programs and sufficiency of the budgets allocated.”

Meanwhile, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Parliament of the Republic of Indonesia and Fiji to allow the two countries to work together to exchange knowledge and information, and also assist each other in achieving SDGs.

The two-day forum involved 49 countries and the event was hosted in Bali, Indonesia from September 6 to 7.
