Fast-food chain expands reach

TWENTY-ONE years ago on this day, an article titled Get ready for Big Mac days was published by this newspaper, which highlighted the opening of McDonald’s in Nadi.

The opening of McDonald’s offered about 200 employment opportunities for locals and it continues to provide employment for the people of Fiji.

A year after McDonald’s opened a branch in Suva City, it added another branch in Laucala Bay in 2002.

The latest branch opened by the fast-food chain was in Lautoka two years ago, whcih also has a McCafe.

“The newest restaurant in Lautoka is the very latest in design and setup incorporating a number of aspects that our customers want and expect from McDonald’s,” said Vere Wong, McDonald’s marketing and people development manager.

McDonald’s has grown over the years and provided Fiji with its signature burgers and fries.

“We have seen the introduction of new machines and technology in our restaurants in addition to the continuous development and training of our management and staff to be able to produce the changing menu items introduced by McDonald’s,” Ms Wong shared

The theme “it’s what I eat and what I do I’m lovin’ it” is part of McDonald’s continuous commitment to inspire people to live balanced, active lifestyles.

The theme captures the message that people should strive to find their own level of energy balance.

McDonald’s follows as many as 72 safety checks and procedures in the restaurants, one of which is using different coloured gloves when handling raw and cooked foods and also checking temperatures of products and equipment at least twice a day.

McDonald’s restaurants in Fiji also have a halal certification from the Fiji Muslim League.
