For many decades, Ovaltine has been a reliable and healthy drink of choice for Fijians.
Packed with fourteen vitamins and ten minerals, the chocolate-malt flavoured Ovaltine continues to win the hearts of millions of health conscious consumers across the globe.
Initially developed in Switzerland in 1904, Ovaltine (also known as Ovomaltine) has turned 102 years old this year.
Ovaltine is ideal for any time of the day or night and is loved by adults and children alike. It is also considered a very safe and healthy drink during pregnancy as well.
Kids and adults alike can enjoy Ovaltine as a warm or cold beverage. Consumed in moderation, it offers health benefits by providing considerable amounts of fourteen vitamins and ten minerals.
Here are just a few of many reasons Ovaltine continues to be the favourite health drink for thousands of Fijians.
Fat-Free
Ovaltine is a fat-free drink, which encourages good heart health. According to the American Heart Association, reducing saturated fat, cholesterol and trans-fat in your diet can help increase heart health by reducing the risk of developing heart disease or Type-2 diabetes. Reduced fat consumption can also help reduce the risk of high cholesterol, which may lead to heart disease.
B-Complex Vitamins
Ovaltine contains an array of B-complex vitamins, which are used in the body to convert food to energy and to control appetite, mood, sleep, contraction and relaxation of nerves and muscles, and metabolism. Vitamin B6 works to support the brain. Consuming a serving of Ovaltine contributes enough towards your daily value of vitamin B-6.
Bone Health
Ovaltine contains both calcium and vitamin D, which are needed for bone growth and strengthening. This vitamin-and-mineral combination is especially important for growing children. Due to the natural process of ageing, bones become less dense as the years go by, making them more susceptible to fractures and increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis. An inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D can prevent osteoporosis. Each serving of Ovaltine provides enough of our daily value for calcium and vitamin D.
lood Health
The mineral iron, contained in Ovaltine, is critical for delivering oxygen throughout the body and for haemoglobin production. A person whose body is low in iron can develop iron-deficiency anaemia, which can cause symptoms such as fatigue, rapid pulse and difficulty in breathing. Eating foods or drinking liquids that contain iron can help to prevent this condition. Ovaltine contains enough of daily value of iron in each serving.
Apart from being a healthy drink, Ovaltine is also perfect as an ingredient which can be used to make many types of snacks.
Ovaltine is distributed in Fiji by Motibhai Group, bringing quality products for you and your family.
OVALTINE BUN
Created by Janelle Bloom of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
Ingredients
* 2 cups of self-raising flour
* 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
* ½ cup of caster sugar
* 1 cup of sultanas or raisins
* 6 tablespoons of Ovaltine
* 1 ½ cups of milk
* Tablespoon of golden syrup
Method
* Combine the golden syrup and milk together.
* So the golden syrup doesn’t stick to the spoon. Spray it with a little bit of oil (never dip the oil spoon into the golden syrup).
* Give them a stir and pop into the microwave oven for about a minute just so the milk warms through and the golden syrup dissolves.
* While that’s warming add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to flour and sift these two together.
* Once that’s done, add the caster sugar and the Ovaltine. Give it a stir.
* Now add the milk (check its warm, you don’t want it too hot) give it a stir so the golden syrup dissolves.
* Pour the milk in (be gentle).
* As you stir you can see the warm milk reacting with the bicarbonate of soda.
* Mix until nice and thick.
* Add fruit (you can use sultanas, raisins, chopped dates).
* Pour the mix into a loaf pan.
* Spread nice and gently.
* Put into the oven at 180°C without the fan on for 50- 60 minutes until you test with a skewer that comes out clean.
