Pacific Games bill
HONIARA – Leader of the Independent Group in Parliament, Dr Derek Sikua has congratulated the Government for urgently putting together a bill for the 2023 Pacific Games which Solomon Islands won the bid to host in May this year.
Dr Sikua made the congratulatory remarks in Parliament when contributing to a Special adjournment motion moved by the Prime Minister,Manasseh Sogavare.
World Cup boost
PORT MORESBY – The economy of Port Moresby has been given a K25 million boost by hosting of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Soccer championship. The beneficiaries include service providers such as hotels, PMV buses, private hospitals, motor dealers, caterers, tourism, art and craft and small and medium enterprises alike and more than 1000 youths, contracted to help.
First win
PORT MORESBY – Defending champion Germany has registered its first win in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The Germans defeated Venezuela 3-1 in the first match for Group D on Day Two in front of 1 858 supporters.
PM defends
PORT MORESBY – Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill last night defended the performance of the Papua New Guinea team taking part in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
“We should not expect too much from them, our girls cannot be champions overnight,” said a concerned Prime Minister after hearing reports of criticism from the general public.
Strike may affect players
PORT MORESBY – The PNG Health Support Workers Association is mindful that its impending industrial action may affect treatment of injuries at the FIFA under-20 Women’s Soccer tournament. Members of the 400-strong association, mostly in Port Moresby, are planning to strike over better pay and working conditions.
FIBA stars
SUVA – Most of the young players competing in the FIBA U18 Oceania Championships have the dream of playing basketball both professionally and representing their senior national teams. This is the reality for many past FIBA Oceania youth events stars. Drafted by the Utah Jazz with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Dante Exum was a member of the Australian Men’s team that won gold at the 2011 FIBA U17 Oceania Championship.
Olympic Games
DOHA – International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has claimed he could imagine Qatar as a candidate for a future Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Gulf State put forward Doha as a candidate for the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games but on each occasion failed to even make the shortlist. The events were awarded to Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo respectively.
